CtrlMovie is a novel interactive movie format. It gives filmmakers the tools to tell multi-optional stories in a truly cinematic way. The audience gets to make decisions on behalf of the main character and is thrilled to see the consequences of their choices unfold on screen seamlessly without a noticeable gap or edit.
The film never stops. No decision is still an action. The viewers are under the same time pressure as the protagonist, together as a group of people in theatres, or individually on an iPad.
CtrlMovie was originally conceived for handheld, touch-enabled devices and comes to the audience as a stand-alone mobile app. It runs on iOS and Android and can be internationally distributed via Apple’s App Store and Google Play.
To meet the mobile user’s consumption habits, your movie comes in chapter-like episodes. You can promote your CtrlMovie by offering the app and a first episode for free and monetize the download of further episodes by in-app purchases.
CtrlMovie also offers a participative event-cinema experience. Let the cinema audience decide! The audience’s mobile devices, a mobile website and high-speed wifi enable majority votes.
With such interactive screenings you will not just offer the audiences (and cinema operators) a spectacular experience, but you’ll also have a powerful tool at hand to promote your CtrlMovie. As with any “conventional” movie, you’ll be able to be present it at film festivals and do your PR work.
We’re currently working on making CtrlMovie run both for IPTV (set top boxes for digital TV) and for HTML5 for web-based play. Don’t hesitate to contact us, if you have needs in this regard. We would love to shift this upwards on our list of priorities.
Don’t forget: you can always create a conventional linear version of your CtrlMovie. Simply stick to one of the many possible storylines and you’re ready for all conventional distribution channels, be it cinema, TV, VoD or DVD.
Display buttons during playback to allow the user to influence the story.
Flexibly jump between segments – at an exact timecode, in a time frame or triggered by user actions.
Allow users to look around in the film by panning the image with swipe gestures.
Make objects in the film tappable with unlimited numbers of animated masks.
Store user decisions in variables to retrieve them later for a delayed effect on the story.
Use short java scripts to evaluate former actions of the user and to influence the storyline.
Add multiple audio tracks independent from the video segments and jump actions.
Use the advantage of displaying browser windows and other interactive elements on top of the movie during playback.
Easily add subtitles to support a wider audience.
The founders and executives behind CtrlMovie have their backgrounds in filmmaking, advertising and IT. They first joined forces at the Swiss advertising and film production company &Söhne. The basic idea of CtrlMovie was born during their search for new ways to entertain audiences with branded content. CtrlMovie soon proved to have the potential for much more, namely to add a new dimension to cinematic movies.
CtrlMovie AG was founded in the beginning of 2014 with the purpose to promote the new format for all interested filmmakers. Together with &Söhne, the company is producing the first feature-length CtrlMovie «Late Shift».
